CD Reviews

Misleading title
01/01/1999
(1 out of 5 stars)

"Anybody expecting a CD full of impassioned, gospel influenced vocal intensity will be sorely disappointed by this misleadingly titled compilation. The term Deep Soul was originally invented - by British critic and fan Dave Godin - to differentiate the darker, more emotional side of soul from the lighter, pop influenced soul that was in vogue at the time. Few of the songs on this CD come close to Deep Soul, and at least one (Disco Tex) is merely a very poor disco record, and doesn't belong on any compilation of soul music. What it does have are some very good mid-tempo grooves which are undeniably soulful, but lack the raw emotional content of the best Deep Soul. For anyone wanting a good compilation of Deep Soul check out Dave Godins Deep Soul Treasures on Kent, or try to get hold of The Deepest Soul vols 1 and 2 on the UK Goldmine label. Ignore this - it is NOT Deep Soul."
