Synopsis

Album Description
Nobody will re-invent the mash-up, yet the genre continues to seek out opposites to be put through the shredder to become one schizophrenic track. DJ Kicks: The Black Edition serves as a single, flowing mash-up of 42 tracks culled from the endless !K7 catalog. Combining two songs is one matter, but mashing up an entire label has to be an all-time first. !K7 A&R master SST and enigmatic DJ Superdefekt have made sound confetti out of the house catalogue, almost eight years of miscellaneous music in just one hour. The result is a finely tuned audio zapping of the highlights of the labels favorite hits and rarities. Certainly not your average DJ-Kicks mix, it takes some astonishing twists that are sure to turn the stomachs of turntable gawkers and mixing fetishists, much to the delight of genre-crossing music freaks. Shrouded in mysterious black packaging, The Black Edition is a limited edition homage to the bootleg nature of the mash-up scene where coveted white labels are sold from the trunks of mischievous DJ?s car trunks and the basements of ahead-of-the-curve record shops. Genres are ignored and the lines between hip-hop, electro, house, soul, techno and rock are blurred until they become one mass of brilliant music, fit only for the wildest party.

A Wild Ride
LHB | Dallas, TX | 09/21/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I haven't heard Coldcut's "70 Minutes of Madness," but it would have to go some to be wilder than this. Starts out medium tempo, passes dizzyingly through every genre imaginable, and builds to a pretty wild climax, after which it fades out on a calmer note. A few gripes: There are only four tracks on the CD, while it covers about 30 pieces, so it's very difficult to figure out what's playing. Since it is a more or less continuous mix, however, this makes sense. There's some pretty raw stuff in the mix (which is fine with me, but some might find it nice to know in advance) so don't play it at your 7 year old daughter's birthday party. Other than that, its a real blast, limited only by the DJ's confining themselves to material in k7's back catalogue"
