Synopsis

Album Description
The Sonotone label was founded in Cuba in 1956 by a very innovative producer named Manuel Mato. Mato?s great love for the classic music of his native land inspired him to seek out the cream of the crop of Cuban artists. The most popular singers that were burning up the nightclubs in Havana in late fifties were severely under recorded until Mato came along to record many of them. The classic crooners that Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole would sit and listen to on their trips to Havana made it into Mato?s studio to record. When Mato fled Cuba for Miami in 1960, the only things he left with were the clothes on his back and the masters from his studio. He wasted no time when he got to the states and was the first to record Cuban émigrés in the US. It is from this vast treasure trove of music that this compilation was culled. These classic Cuban crooner?s rare recordings were handpicked by Matos for this collection including the ultra rare 50?s recording of Fuí Cupable by the late great Puntillita of Buena Vista Social Club fame. Puntiliita did not record again until Ry Cooder rediscovered him some 40 years later.
