CD Reviews

Good Gospel Compilation

"The Creed Gospel Classics series consist of recordings from the Nashboro label ( of Nashville, Tennessee ), one of the most active gospel labels from the 1950s until the early 1980s. Nashboro enjoyed the perfect geographical location in the heart of the South to understand and reflect the pulse change in gospel music. The series contain both music from gospel's golden age, like the Swanee Quintet, Edna Gallmon Cooke and The Angelic singers, and also gospel artists of the soul generation, like The Gospel Keynotes, Tommy Ellison and The Supreme Angels.Volume 8 in this series includes some interesting songs like Tommy Ellison's Come home, Jesus you've been good to me, by The Gospel Keynotes and I feel like going on, by Alex Bradford. But the one song that moves me the most is the Prayer song by Rev. Cleophus Robinson. Robinson's song has a jazzy flavour, both in his phrasing of the song and also in the backing of the rhythm section ( piano, organ, drums, and solo guitar ). But what's most of all moving are the lyrics of the song, the sincere supplications...."I've got another thing that I want you to do Lord....Ohhh,remember those boys, that's fighting on the battle fields...please, please, please". With the resent situation in the world, how can you but be touched when you hear a sincere supplication like this?"
