"This is a collection of blues songs from the '20s, '30s and '40s. These songs were grouped together because they were "topical", at the time. That is to say, they dealt with issues that were of interest to black people at the time. Among the subjects of the songs included here are: natural disasters, poverty and unemployment, illegal activities such as gambling and bootlegging, the lives of famous black Americans, World War II, the atomic bomb, and so on. With any collection of this nature, some of the performers are better than others. I like Big Bill Broonzy the best, but that's just a personal preference. This is a well chosen collection that should appeal to fans of the old time blues."
