From the day the Pilgrim Fathers traversed the Atlantic Ocean in the early 17th Century, European folk music continued heading westwards for several centuries. The early settlers moved out into the Carolinas, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee and took their music with them, composing new songs about their everyday life to the old tunes that they had brought with them. The music became entrenched in the rural areas of these states and eventually became known as "mountain music" or "country music". It was played on stringed instruments, mainly the fiddle and guitar and provided entertainment at home and at weekends when folks gathered together for dances. And there the music stayed until the advent of the gramophone and 78 rpm records as well as radio in the early part of the 20th century. Disc 1: Bill Monroe (25 tracks 1941-1954) Disc 2: Flatt & Scruggs (25 tracks 1951-1954) Disc 3: Stanley Brothers (25 tracks 1949-1954) Disc 4: Various (28 tracks 1937-1954) Artists Include: Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Jimmie Skinner, The Bailey Brothers, Reno & Smiley and many others. CD Reviews
Great CD for your collection

(5 out of 5 stars)
"This 4 CD set from Proper records is a wonderfull collection. Plus its a great value. For those folks who want or just need a sampling of fine Blue Grass music this is it. Of course there's Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs and a sampling of other folks. Yes its just centered on the 1940's and 1950's, but what an era to base a four CD pack. It has a good balance between sacred music and Blue Grass classics. Its great picking and fiddling that will leave you wanting more."
