CD Reviews

A Very Cold Funky & Soulful, Yet Still Rockin' DP Tribute
Frank Beltran | 04/06/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Don't bother reading the previous review, as the "Smoke on the Water Tribute" is a 1980's Cheese Guitar Shredding Metal CD, and Purple were more about substance, dynamics, and keep in mind they were virtuoso musicians. So the fact that the previous guys actually likes that CD ruins all credibility for me on his review. This CD adds elements of funk, soul, reggae, and the songs are rearranged to make things interesting, yet it still rocks in the right places. Who wants to to hear the old songs done the same way that Purple did anyways! The players include Joe Lynn Turner (ex of DP/Rainbow), Corey Glover (Living Coulour), Ritchie Kotzen, and Tony Harnell sharing the vocals, along with Al Pitrelli, Vinnie Moore, and Kotzen handle the guitars with Lars Y. Loudamp making a special guest appearance as the lead guitarist on "Burn", a.k.a. Yngwie Malmsteen, who actually turns in a decent performance for a change, and a bunch of other great musicians (Will Calhoun,Cindy Blackmon, etc.) TM Stevens, that funky bass player is the guy who put this together. Check it out and if you go into it with an open mind, you just may dig this record it has a cool swagger and vibe. Enjoy"
INTERPRETATIONS ARE ORIGINAL!
John M. Garvin | Stafford, VA United States | 07/29/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a first-rate production of INTERPRETATIONS of some choice Deep Purple tunes. If a listener wants something that sounds truer to DP, then simply stay away from anything that says Tribute. The musicians are excellent and the arrangements are great. The gutty and funky rock and roll blasting (actually just one thump short of distortion) from the system is infectious. Each track is distinctive and maintains that NY edge. Perhaps these guys ought collaborate more often to do an "According to New York" series on other legendary and timeless classic rock bands or songs. This is a perfect start."
Great cover version by highly talented NY black musicians

"yes there are still few musicians who make a tribute to deep purple. T.M stevens the black rap musician in NY city wrote in his cd sleeve that deep purple is just a kind rare band to fits into this category. But T.M stevens and co had made finally this tribute to Deep purple, it means that deep purple is also one of the very good hard rock band thus their memory of their hey days in the seventies. deep purple music is still enjoyable until today by the younger & older fans. T.M steven, Joe lynn turner (ex RAINBOW), Ritchie Kotzen, Corry Glover, Cindy blackman and many other deep purple rapper and fans in New YORK dedicated the deep purple songs with the new yorker sound such as funky, soul, and a bit rap. the result is amazing. I'm very proud because I'm a big fan of deep purple and I'm happy finally to get this rare cd and simultaneously feel very proud by listening to the Rap black american musicians singing DEEP PURPLE timeless songs.
These musicians are great! I love the way they were playing deep purple music."
