Cool Funk: Vintage Jams and Serious Grooves...Underrated Mus
Nikolos Miranda | Northwest, USA | 01/08/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is vintage and rare collection of tunes that set the timepiece of mid to late 70's Jazz-influenced Funk,

sinewy, often synth-laden wah-wah juxtaposition that reminds you of a Blaxiploitation movie and soundtrack.

Jazz-funk were talking... MILES, Jimmy Smith, Lonnie Smith, Jimmy McGriff, and many others

makin some funky mess... A great sprawl of groove master rivalry!

Talking the original rare groove era -the early to mid 70's, and some live jams with some great playin' almost like that jam band stuff but this is hella funkier, diverse and packed with groove laden goodness.

Have you ever heard of flautist/Saxophonist Joe Thomas? He was known back in the day as the 'Ebony Godfather'...

His groove 'Venus' (not on this collection but from one of his many 70's releases) was recycled on American Pop genius Beck's 1996 hit "The New Pollution". You can hear Thomas's magnificent Sax sampled through Beck's collage of Hip-Hop Folk and Art Rock. Anyway, he is featured many times on this box set and his

work is an example of the art of the Rare Groove. I really dug this stuff in High School, getting into Underground Rap and such. This type of music is shamefully overlooked and underrated by most people. Those who know, know.

Get this while you are able to, on online stores with old stock like Amazon or at a really good record store.

These Rare Groove albums are near IMPOSSIBLE to find anymore, and are 'Crate diggers' or 'Beat Heads' collector's items. Which means you will pay high prices to obtain these jams on original album form. Many of the tracks are

from the Groove Merchant Records catalog (remastered to disc by Laserlight Records) They are way out of print and their master tapes probably don't exist anymore. Which means the discs in this box set are the only source for their existing life on CD.

Highly underrated yet Highly Recommended!

Keep Rare Groove alive! Peace!
