Synopsis

Album Description
Seventh installment of the successful '60s Brit Girl series Dream Babes with a theme that focuses on the 'Beatier' end of the spectrum. Taking Merseybeat as a bench mark, we include a few tunes that illustrate the sounds around at the time such as American pop covers ?Pop Pop Pop Pie? and ?That Boy John?, ?the Showband? recording of ?Baby Roo?, and Joe Meek's production of ?Hobbies?. Then progress through prime time Beat records, such as The Beat Chics rousing ?Now I Know? complete with swirling farfisa like organ in the middle section, very reminiscent of early Animals. A motif that returns on the Alan Price produced ?Can't You Hear My Heartbeat?. Finally emerging mid decade with a hint of what came next, Motown influenced backbeats and Horn parts perfectly exampled on ?Lets Start The Party Going?. On Beat Chic we also include a healthy dose of recordings being reissued for the first time. RPM. 2007

CD Reviews

Happy to see this series "back on track"!!!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"After the volume 6 set of "revists" from other collections and to me, weird tracks from the late 60s & almost in to the 70s it seemed like all of the steam had gone out of the Dream Babes series! Fortunately, here the time clock went backwards a little for a big serving of some obscurities this series has to date always delivered!

Introduction to me on this set is Polly Perkins! Never saw anything else on her anywhere else and was definitely pleased to hear her contributions as well as a little bit more from "Goldie and the Gingerbreads" that only had about 1 track cut on another CD!

From Polly that I especially enjoyed is an upbeat version of the golden Marlene Dietrich classic "Falling in Love Again"

To me what the singers here don't have in more established "star power" as other British female singers they make up for in sass and originality. I think my favorite "hard core" girl group sounding tune on the collection is "Everybody I Know". Silliest is the tune "Gone Tomorrow"! "These boys, never stay...they just collect their pay...then they go away....here today...gone tomorrow!" (As a poor girl laments about wanting to meet one of the local boys in a band that performs at an open forum). Just too silly & cute!

A few covers others had bigger hits with like Pop-Pop-Pie, Baby Roo and some more, but no crime committed in that! Still nice cuts. I hope this series keeps them coming for a long, long time!!

Thanks again!
