CD Reviews

A great sampler of popular music
Farallon | Bay Area, CA USA | 10/04/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"For those who don't know, Alice is the name of a San Francisco area radio station (97.3 FM), and this CD covers a wide sampling of the stuff they play. The artists have donated the songs for the album, and the proceeds go to fight breast cancer.

The track listing reads like a who's who of pop music circa 2000, including Third Eye Blind ("Never Let You Go"), Tracy Chapman ("Telling Stories"), Vertical Horizon (an alternate mix of "Everything You Want"), Leona Naess ("Charm Attack") and Barenaked Ladies ("Call and Answer"), to name but a few. Some of the high points include Guster's spirited "Barrel of A Gun (4,3,2,1)", a special acoustic version of Nine Days' "Absolutely (Story of A Girl)", and Stroke 9's "Tail of the Sun", all of which exemplify the kind of up-and-coming music that is making its mark on the scene, and may soon dethrone some of the more esconced veterans on the album.

The previous three years' editions of "This Is Alice Music" have sold out in a hurry, and are often hard to find even upon their release. Overall a great CD, notably for the special versions of some of the tracks; save yourself the trouble of downloading MP3s and grab this while you can !"
Some great songs, some not so good songs...

"As much as i like to support worthy causes, like the fight against breast cancer, my charitable leanings are only half the reason i picked up this CD. I don't live in San Francisco anymore, and i have a hard time keeping up with what's new in music (local radio stations where i am now don't play much good music). Since getting this CD, i have purchased a Stroke 9 album, a Vertical Horizon album, and i intend to acquire a 9 Days album and perhaps Guster or Leona Naess albums, all because of hearing the songs on this CD and realizing how cool they are. I'm not much of a fan of Tracy Chapman or Fatboy Slim, so i can't listen to this album straight through. However, Never Let You Go is the only Third Eye Blind song i've ever wanted to own, and now i have it without having to buy the whole album. So not only is this a great album, introducing me to all sorts of new music, but it supports the fight against breast cancer. how much cooler could it get?"
