"I own at least 25 Beatles "tribute" CD's. Beleive me, there are some real dogs out there, but this isn't one of them. While I can't say that the tracks are ALL outstanding, they are all worthwhile and some are wonderful. (I could listen to the 5th Dimension sing "Ticket to Ride" all day long.) And by the way, if you're interested, some of my favorite tribute albums are the GRP Jazz Artists' "I Got No Kick Against Modern Jazz," The Swingle Singers' "Ticket to Ride," and the various-artist release "Meet the Covers" (check out Harry Nilsson's "You Can't Do That").
Probably the best tribute of all, however, comes from the man himself, George Martin. His compilation "In My Life," along with the enclosed liner notes, is a rare and wonderful glimpse into the world of the "fifth Beatle," allowing you to hear some Beatles standards as he envisioned them, free of any constraints. Who else could get Robin Williams and Bobby McFerrin to team up on "Come Together," Jim Carrey to sing (scream) "I am the Walrus," or Sean Connery to do a poetic reading of "In My Life?" Let's face it, the Beatles repertoire will continue to be successfully mined for new interpretations as long as there are musicians willing to take a fresh look at some old classics. Beatlemania-- long may it wave."
