CD ReviewsThe messenger, my review from Barcelona, superb Jose Maria Domenech Fedi | 11/06/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Since I listened 97's 'A Star For You' I've been absolutely interested in this moscovite ex Art Balkey's band-mate VALERY PONOMAREV. This record 'The Messenger' is extraordinary ia a fine and polished album from Valery as much playing trumpet as flugelhorn it has an attractive tone, a swinging style and a strong interest in keeping the hard bop legacy of Clifford Brown. I liked all the songs for me at one same level but if I had to choose something perhaps I would select the originals "Escape From Gorky Park" and "Messenger From Russia" both of them well-structured hard-bop themes with individual touches in the harmony.Also I like very much Carmichaels's "Star Dust" a ballad a piece normally in Wynton Marsalis's repertory. In short highly recommended I give it 5 stars."
