"I discovered Valentina Ponomoreva by way of the World of Gypsies CD Vol. 2, which I highly recommend. It includes fourteen different performers from all over Eastern and Western Europe, including Ms. Ponomareva, who not only sings Russian gypsy music but is also an award-winning jazz vocalist.

Born into a family of professional musicians, Ms. Ponomareva has several CDs available, including The Russian Gypsy Queen. This collection of 20 songs ranges from the theatrical and eerie Kamushka, to the lusty Nane Tsokha, to the slow and languorous Kalitka. On Kai Yone, Ms. Ponomareva harmonizes with herself on a separate track to the most wonderful affect. Her voice is full and of a low range with an astounding vibrato. Two songs are violin numbers, masterfully played by her son, Oleg. On the rest, Valentina is backed by the talented gypsy guitars of Konstantin Gogunskiy and Sergey Vorontsov."
