Synopsis

Product Description
It's hard to imagine a British folk outfit with fans like Radiohead, Portishead, Robert Wyatt, Ben Folds, Ewan McGregor and Nick Hornby, but The Unthanks occupy a unique place in music. It's influenced as much by the minimalist eccentricity of Steve Reich, Antony & The Johnsons, Robert Wyatt and Miles Davis, as they are by the traditional music of the North East of England where sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank grew up, back home The Unthanks have established themselves as the most innovative and critically acclaimed folk band in modern history.

CD Reviews

I must be lazy.
Music Lover | Peachtree City, GA USA | 05/12/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"First let me say that I rarely get excited about music any more. I must be lazy by not taking the time to sift through the clutter to find the hidden gems.

Yesterday I heard a review of the Unthanks on NPR. When I heard the descriptions "Clog Dancing" and "English Folk Music", mentally I started reaching for the radio dial. But luckily for me, Tom Moon lured me in with his introduction to something fresh and different, yet paradoxically as comfortable as a pair of old shoes.

This music is subtle and vibrant. The vocals are so good - and truly unique. The sisters Unthank take their harmonies to so many unexpected places, the effect has been described as "ear stretching", that I long for the next time I can replay the album to enjoy its spine-tingling effect. Once you hear their tracks, especially the title cut, you will know what I mean. You won't want the songs to end.

It has been a long time that there has been a new release that I have actually taken the time to seek out. I am so glad that I did."
