"The Unthanks Sisters,

The GENIUS of their work may lie in their understanding of clog dancing, rhythm and concentration. It may be due to a "McGarrigle" sister thing, innate understanding and sympathy. Who knows???

The authenticity of this music (all three albums} is unmistakable. The charm, the unerring choice of musicians, the choice of songs... traditional, Jordie, Scotish plus covers of Nick Drake (vol 1) Robert Wyatt (vol 2) Ann Briggs & Lal Waterson (vol 3). Perfect line-up!

I have found these haunting, timeless recordings amongst my favorites of 2010. I hope you will too.

"Due to having received so many Brit and European awards as well as glowing reviews in Mojo, Uncut, et al., recognition of the Unthanks and Co. and their music is starting to grow here in the U.S. If it keeps up, then they will be able to do a tour of medium to large music clubs and I will certainly attempt to get tickets. Understand, while the Unthanks do not have a slavish adherence to "tradition," their music is indeed drawn from ancient and deep wells in the "old country," and is often quiet (for these days), with drama produced as often from repetition and contrasts in volume as it is from the slight changes to those repetitions and from their rigorous musical techniques. But it neither, and very far from, "New Age" or synthesizer styles (think Enya) or contemporary folk or country music, as the Unthanks also play an eclectic grabbag of songs by auteurs (such as Robert Wyatt, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Antony and the Johnsons) as traditional ballads.. If you understand this description and relate to it, then you should buy this album because it's gorgeous, plain and simple, and you will find even more listening pleasure on repeated spins. As a PS, their earlier albums (whether under Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, or Rachel Unthank)are a bit less varied musically and adhere more to their northeastern England roots so, if you want to give the Unthanks' music a try, the "Tender Coming" CD is the best place to start. Enjoy!"
