CD Reviews

Little known music played with verve
F. Behrens | Keene, NH USA | 02/15/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There is a label called Delos that is not afraid to record little known music of no earth-shaking consequence but of a nature jolly and enjoyable enough for me to recommend. This CD is devoted to (DE 3251) that offers us 18 examples of their varied repertory. The five instruments to be heard here are domra, gusli, bayan, double bass balalaika, and synthesizer. (Yes, I did a doubletake at the last in that list too.) The music they play on these instruments varies from a fantasy on a Kuban song, a dance from "The Nutcracker," some Rameau, a tango, and some blues! What is also good about this concert is that "it includes mostly the music of Russian composers virtually Unknwon beyond that country's borders" (as the press release puts it). So not having any touchstone with which to comment on the results (except for the Rameau, Tchaikovsky and one or two others), I can say simply I enjoyed listening to it immensely and perhaps you will also."
Wonderful!

"The music played by these Ukrainian and Russian musicians is sensational. In person these performers were very friendly and Valentin Zaviriukha, in particular, was very funny during the performance. Simply amazing. This CD is a must buy! You won't regret it."
