Synopsis

Album Description
Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1971 album including bonus tracks. With its plangent melodies, wistful CSNY-style vocal harmonies, meshing acoustic/electric instrumentation and clean production sound (courtesy of Hugh Murphy, just a few weeks away from overseeing Gerry Rafferty's similar sounding, and similarly essential, debut solo LP) , Uphill All The Way is now considered something of a lost classic by admirers of the post-Beatles/Byrds Soft Rock/Progressive Pop genre. Taken from the original master tapes, this definitive reissue rounds up stray single cuts from the era as well as adding a new remix of their superb version of Jimmy Webb's 'P. F. Sloan'. It includes a lavish 16-page booklet that features a new essay on the band's early years, with fresh quotes from founder member Pat Martin and numerous previously unpublished photos. Cherry Tree. 2009.

CD Reviews

Not Bad, Just Not Great
Fred Rayworth | Las Vegas, NV United States | 06/30/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is another one of those albums I put on reel to reel tape but shelved for 30 years. It was a nice surprise to find this one. Since it is from the album, it doesn't have the extra track, Cosmic Kid on it.

The music and songs are not bad at all. At times, they remind me of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. The playing is also competent. A few of the melodies still ring in my head, partially because when I transferred this to my computer, I had to re-record it four times before I got a good version.

That being said, this is very mild and mellow, a hint of country rock, but a hint of CSNY also, in that vein. However, after listening to it several times, I have a urge to put in something loud and obnoxious like Bathory or Cannibal Corpse, just to pick me up again.

Don't let my musical prejudices sway you from seeking this out. I originally rated this as three stars, but then again, that's my musical taste, rather than their playing and style, so I bumped it up to four as this could be considered a lost gem. If you are into mellow music, this should fit the bill, and I highly recommend Unicorn for those of you so inclined. If you are looking for something heavy or maybe psychedelic, as the band name and album cover (sort of) suggest, then look elsewhere.
