Rap Fusion Comes of Age

"This is an impressive CD. I don't get off on all rap, and most new rap seems derivative and/or wannabe. This one is different--there's a mind behind the lyrics, not just a pose. For me this CD builds as it progresses. The first three cuts are basic rap: RHYTHMRY has sort of showoffy rhythm tricks, and the next two are pretty grim gangstah raps: HELL AND HUNGER and THIRD WORLD--I really like the latter. Then things get really interesting and thoughtful. AIN'T NO RHYME is a clever piece about the increasing moral decay of the speaker; check out the clever rhymes in this--they have a lot to do with the message. TO BUILD A HARMONY is, for me, a similar message to Ebony and Ivory but a step up and in rap form, and MADELEINE uses, if you can believe it, a reference to Proust, the French writer. It's wonderful that rap can take on so many forms and that people are raising its quality. Well done. We want more."
