"From Kalamazoo,Mi., these guys have chops that shift in a second from rocking disonance to the catchiest of melodies, the kind that the next day are repeating in your head.
The singer has a lower reedy type of voice that, in the mix, almost seems to be splitting into hi and low harmonnies. I had never heard anything like it until one of those Tuvan "throat singers".
I am normally not a lyrics person, almost don't hear them beyond melodic implication; but this guy is clear, succinct and poignant at the same time- while maintaining enough elusive quality to leave open to interpretation.
But the real genius here is the guitar player who writes the songs. Rock music that defies further categorization, Mid western mid 90's to compare to Johnboy, Tar, Season to Risk, Wreck, and Hum, but as the Beatles were to the 60's. And it rocks!
I KID YOU NOT! Several friends, hard to impress, had jaws to the floor like in a Tex Avery cartoon with each new song. As a Radio person, I was in touch with the guitarist/leader/writer for a few years, but Grass Rec's didn't know what to do with them; jealously holding on to them, but leading them on until music caught up.
I will be checking out some of these other releases that are new to me, and hopefully are the same fellows (it IS a good name)
so check back y'all. I can not recommend a record more highly.
