CD Reviews

Sean keane master singer
Andrew Calhoun | Portland, Oregon | 12/13/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sean Keane has a magnificent, slightly reedy singing voice and knows how to use it. From the stirring version of the traditional Gaelic song "Stor Machree" to his cover of Richard Thompson's weirdly beautiful "Galway to Graceland," Keane proves himself both a stunning vocal technician and a musician with tremendous heart. The two opening tracks - Tommy Sand's "Age of Uncertainty" and Ewan MacColl's "Tunnel Tigers" are actually the weakest tracks here, really a small complaint given the extraordinarily high quality of the rest of the material. The production is superb and the CD just gets richer, cleaner and deeper upon repeated listenings. Sean Keane embraces a great deal of what it means to be human: this is very special, very nurturing work. -Andrew Calhoun"

"The Music Of Healing"

"Seán's 2nd solo album, "Turn A Phrase", is an excellent buy. His unique voice and style of singing compels the listener to re-play the tracks over and over.My personal favourite, "The Green Among The Gold", is a vivid and descriptive song of the emigrant who brought the music of Ireland with him to "a far off distant shore". This track also features Seán's wonderful tin-whistle playing.Overall, this album is a fine piece of work."
