CD Reviews

At last, Wagner would be pleased!
Diane H. Wegenke-Arnstein | New York, NY United States | 02/27/2000

"Martha Modl IS Isolde on this recording! This CD belongs in everyones collection! Martha's blend of passion and technical prowess is exactly what Wagner had in mind, I am sure. You have to be moved when you hear her. I own this CD and have given it to others as a gift. We all agree that it is outstanding."
Ideal Tristan and Isolde

"The singing of Martha Modl is glorious, as another fan pointed out. But this (regrettably) highlights recording also features a very underrated Wolfgang Windgassen, whose heldentenor voice is nothing but spectacular, with youthful bloom and dramatic heft.
A full version of this opera with these singers must be made available!"
Desert Island Disc

"This CD is one of my desert island discs. Martha Mödl and Wolfgang Windgassen are superb. Mödl's account of the Liebestod is the most moving I have heard. Others may do it better technically, but she gets it in the larger cosmic sense. In the love duet, Mödl and Windgassen match perfectly. The Narrative and Curse selection includes quite a bit of music following the curse that is usually omitted when this part of the opera is excerpted. It is an excellent counterpart to the Karajan recording from Bayreuth 1952 (make sure you get the more expensive transfer, the cheaper Gala release has terrible sound)."
