Rock 'n Roll At It's Finest.
05/06/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Rocky Burnette and Billy Burnette, the first-born sons for Paul Burlison's legendary Rock 'n Roll Trio bandmates, Johnny and Dorsey Burnette, do the scourching vocals as The Band's Jim Weider, Springsteen's E Street Band bassist Gary Tallent and Elvis Presley's original drummer D.J. Fontana join Burlison on his blazin' re-do of the 1956 Johnny Burnette Trio recording that introduced electrically distorted fuzztone guitar to music. This all-star Rock And Roll celebration also features Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds singing "She's Hot," Levon Helm and Mavis Staples on a suacy "Hound Dog," plus David Hidalgo and fellow Los Lobos on "Lonesome Tears In My Eyes," a Johnny Burnette Trio original that was an early favorite of The Beatles. Echoes of that legendary period when the Johnny Burnette Trio is credited with inventing Rockabilly, can also be heard on Paul Burlison's "Boogie To Woodstock" instrumental. With long-time Fleetwood Mac member Billy Burnette doing his original "Memphis Blues," this great CD also provides the treat of Rocky Burnette doing his original "Trouble Is I'm In Love With You." A must-have CD for any serious rock music lover's collection."
Fine, Fine Rockin

"This is one smokin' disc.

Paul Burlison passed recently. He was a rockabilly pioneer with the Rock and Roll Trio and then he "retired" from music for a career as an electrical contractor. He resurfaced in the 90's, first on the too-cool but hard to find "Sun Rhythm Section" disc and now on this one.

On "Train Kept A-Rollin" Burlison and his band play host to a gaggle of hotshots. The guests are seasoned veterans of the music biz but when they are playing with Paul Burlison they are the young guys. Burlison provides solid rhythms and nifty leads but leaves plenty of room for his pals to get after it.

I particularly like the cuts "Train Kept A-Rollin", "She's Hot" with Kim Wilson, and the Los Lobos guys on "We're Gonna Rock". All parties were in high gear on these tunes. Burlison's drummer is particularly notable for the nice parts he played all around.

Burlison's picking is more polished than his "Rock and Roll Trio" sides but he still has "the feel" in spades. A++"
Rockabilly masterpiece

"A modern rockabilly masterpiece by an originator of the genre. Burlison's songs and fuzzed guitar playing make you want to boogie across your living room. This is American roots music at its best."
