Toure Kunda were the first African band to obtain a worldwide recognition, they opened the way for other World music bands and artists to follow in their footsteps. Santhiaba is the name of the area in Casamance where the Toure brothers were born and received their first musical influences. They sing in several languages spoken in Senegal as a good reflection of the local crossbreeding they grew up with. "With Santhiaba, we had fun travelling through the rhythms of the world, from Morna to Cha Cha Cha and also from Reggae to Tango". Tour? Kunda was originally formed in 1979 by the brothers Ismaila Tour? and Sixu Tidiane Tour? . A third brother, Ousmane, joined a few years later. They were born to Sonink? parents in the Casamance region of Senegal. The name Tour? Kunda means "elephant family" in Sonink? language.
