CD Reviews

Help Yourself To A Tom Jones Gem
Tom | Pgh PA | 01/28/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This 1968 album, available now on CD, stands as one of the most popular releases in the Tom Jones catalogue. From the bouncy, salsa feel of the hit single title track, to the heart wrenching sadness of the classic "If You Go Away", Jones is at his romantic best on an album that steers towards mainstream pop and away from the rock and roll or country influenced sounds of his previous recordings. This album is a must for any TJ fan, one of the biggest sellers of his career (his first Top 10 album in the States), especially if romantic pop is what you are looking for. The CD has a few bonus tracks not originally available on the LP such as "Looking Out My Window", a rare, self penned rocker built to showcase Jones powerhouse emotive vocal style. Two hit singles from the 1970's, "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" and "Can't Stop Loving You" are also included."
THE TIGER is and will always be the best!

"I had to update my Tom collection of LP's and start getting him on CD -- I found this album used on VINYL and bought it for a mere few dollars only to find that several of the songs skipped - so it was onto buying the CD. Every song on this album is wonderful. The novilty gem "What a Party" with Tom singing, "Tom got scratched by a Pussycat, sorry 'bout that!" It doesn't get better. My new favorite song discovery is "So Afraid." The great "My Girl Maria" and also "If YOu Go Away."
Tom co wrote the lyrics to "Looking Out My Window" which he re-recored on his RELOAD album back in 1999. A great song with such brassy horns. And who can forget the anthem, "WITHOUT LOVE." That is truly one of Tom's best songs. Like the other reviewer said - if you only get one album - this one is it. If you want to investigate the mastery of Tom Jones -- buy this one.
Tom's new album is coming out Oct. 21, 2002 but only in UK and Europe - you'll have to get it on import. His last album, RELOAD, sold 3 million copies worldwide. I think his best selling album ever. If you get a chance to see him you must do so. His voice is better than ever and he puts 110% into each performance. Dynamic legendary talent doesn't come around much anymore these days."

"This album is from the 60's when Tom Jones was the best crooner of his time. Forget Frank S and Tony B, this guy had the voice of his time. This album shouts out the power of this special Welch voice, a once in a lifetime treat. From the popular "Help Yourself" to the pleading of "Laura" and the heartfelt "Break th News", this album will bring you in and you'll never want out. A true classic."
