CD Reviews

An overlooked album

"Few words can describe the fullness and richness that this CD endows; instruments and lyrics go together with such feeling. This being Shiina Ringo's second album with Tokyo Jihen, her singing has matured more and is fuller. In relation to this, Tokyo Jihen has, in my opinion, a much richer and fuller sound with Shiina Ringo on the vocals; than when Shiina Ringo was still doing her solo work from 1999-2003. Stylistically, Adult by Tokyo Jihen, can be thought of as a hybrid of rock and jazz.

Grows like tinea ...

"I really liked the loudness of Kyoiku - with Gunjou Hiyori being my vote for power pop song of the last 100 years - so I was revved up for another burst & initially somewhat disappointed by Adult. But I must say the CD works as a piece of work much better than Kyoiku and has really grown on me. Loving it very much. Shena Ringo is a genius."
TJ is a great listen.

"I can see where the reviewer who felt that ablum was disappointing is coming from. But I still love Tokyo Jihen in both forms (though I enjoy watching and listening to HZM on the keys). I think the title of the CD gives it away that it is a matured sound. The disappointment by the review below is based on Shiina's less present voice and a more focused style, but I think that is the whole point of the albumn. For music to be enjoyable and to the point where it can be called brilliant, there is no need for a ultra clean production or even 'produced' and cleaned up sound. Music speaks as long as you can hear it and feel it. I actually like the production (how the recording sounds) on Adult because it fits with the style. And while it is more focused you still have your interludes of eletronica with the upbeat funk, latin sound, and even a sort of dixie land. It is all good. A more matured style, yes. But Shiina is in her late 20's...along with everyone else (or around there). And, hell, the bassist was born in the 60's! I like mature. Adult is a direction I like. :)"
