Multi-instrumentalist Tobias Hellkvist (b.1984) was born and raised in the south of Sweden, just outside Malm". He's a songwriter / sound artist / producer and has been making music since his early teens. Some of his works are just him with a guitar and some of it is computer-based soundscapes in the ambient / drone genre. Last year he released his third full-length album Evolutions on Home Normal to critical acclaim. His fourth album will be out later this year on Install. When Tobias sent me a copy of Evolutions last year it blew my socks off and I knew we had to release it on Home Normal. His organic multi-instrumental structures seemed to take many by surprise and ended up being a favourite on many people's end of year playlists. For his latest work 'Kaskelot', Tobias improvised and recorded during one late night in April 2011 at Sundlaugin in Reykjavik, Iceland (the Sigur Ros studios no less). Using piano, vibraphone, pump organ, guitar, pedal steel, loops and percussion, Kaskelot sees Tobias create an incredibly affecting piece (divided into four sections), with a more direct and lively approach than we are used to from his earlier work.
