Synopsis

On his ninth album, the fiery Atlanta guitarist stretches his established boundaries just enough to prove he's not stagnating, but not too far as to alienate his established fans. Opening with "Still in the Game," a Cream-filled dose of '60s psychedelic blues-rock, the road-hardened Ellis also kicks out the jams with extended solos on the grungy riff-based "12 Pack Poet" and the dynamic closing ballad "The Last Song." But he displays a less volatile personality during the album's midsection. The sweet R&B of "Me Without You"--with its thumping drums and snaky organ--could easily be a forgotten cover from the Stax or Hi labels. Here Ellis forgoes his usual growl to sing in a convincing falsetto-like croon and plays with the control of Steve Cropper. He applies similar restraint to the swampy, funky "I'll Get Over You," the lazy Jimmy Reed shuffle "Fountain of Youth" (with hometown buddy Sean Costello blowing slithery harp), and even the jazz-rock instrumental "Love Bomb." The Hard Way is a diverse yet cohesive work played with class and intensity, proving that Ellis can comfortably transcend the often-limited blues-rock genre. --Hal Horowitz

Tinsley Ellis Little Known Guitar God
Lucas Goble | 05/16/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I will never be able to turn enough people on to tinsley ellis. I own every album and will own every future album. If you like blues rock you WILL like Tinsley. I have been to two live shows and talked with Tinsley. This kind of music doesent come around every day or even every ten or twenty years. Hats off to this muscial genius who enspires young blues men every time he picks up a guitar. With music slowly slipping into the depths of doom with crap like britney spears and rap music thank god for tinsley ellis. Live Album out June 7th. TinselyEllis.com Invest in every album if you have the cash. You will NOT be dissapointed. One of the finest guitar players alive today with a killer band. Do not think twice about purchasing any of his albums and see a live show at any cost but bring good shoes cause you will be standing all night long. Long live Tinsley Ellis!!!!!!"
Another pleasing effort

"Although I own more than one of Tinsley's albums, this is the first one I've reviewed. His hard edged guitar sound and gruff vocals remain but there's also a bit more here. There are elements of jazz, psychedelic 60's rock and Stax sounding sweet soul music. It's as if he discovered that versatility is the key to not being pegged as just another blues rock guitarist. Recommended if you like Robert Cray or Jimmy Thackery."
It's About Time...

"...that an artist of Ellis' stature and obvious talent has a chance to fly out of his pigeon-hole and stretch his wings. It seems that The Hard Way has given him just that opportunity. Having followed Ellis' career for over twenty years (and always suspecting that there was more to him than the "guitar slinger" persona foisted upon him by marketing types,) his latest effort is a validation of those suspicions; This ain't your daddy's 1-4-5 blues, but a mature synthesis of a lifetime's worth of experiences earned "The Hard Way"."
