Timex Social Club's Career Is Filled With "Rumors"
retro_styled_crooner | Tustin, CA USA | 10/06/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Timex Social Club (Mike Marshall, Marcus Thompson, and Alex Hill) had one huge hit in 1986, the chart-topping "Rumors." The two similair follow-up singles, "Thinkin' About Ya," and "Mixed Up World" (Janet Jackson's "Together Again" samples "Mixed Up World") both hit the R&B top 20 the following year. The group originally wrote the hit song "Rumors" in the eary '80s while still attending high school, but the group would later fall apart from selfishness, jealousy, and greed. Lead vocalist Mike Marshall wanted full control, and took full credit, which was a lie, for writing the song "Rumors" and choosing the name Timex Social Club, which was even bigger lie (Alex Hill made the beat on a synthesizer, Marcus Thompson wrote the lyrics and made the name). Producer Jay King, who destroyed the group, went on to form his own band, Club Nouveau, which featured vocals from Mike Marshall on the answer back track to Timex Social Club called "Jealousy." Marshall would go on as one of R&B and hip-hop's most requested vocalists (sang on The Luniz's "I Got 5 on It")."
