Synopsis

Product Description
Tim O'Dell - Dreams Of Pangaea Southport Records (S-SSD 0127) "With this body of music, O'Dell's music paints pictures and evokes moods, while also deftly and persuasively expanding the vocabulary for the medium." -Josef Woodard, liner notes Southport Records presents composer/arranger/saxophonist Tim O'Dell - "Dreams of Pangaea," recorded in Clapp Recital Hall at the University of Iowa. Johnson County Landmark (JCL) is a band consisting of students and jazz faculty based at the University of Iowa, and directed by trombonist-bandleader-professor John Rapson. O'Dell's signature aesthetics coax the tradition of contemporary jazz big band out of the box with this collection of 10 evocative tracks. At times recalling the sounds of Maria Schneider, or the Miles Davis/Gil Evans era, O'Dell's compositions and arrangements explore atmospheric tones, Latin pulses, emotional ballads, groove-based moods and free-wheeling solos. Composer/Saxophonist/Educator Tim O'Dell holds a Masters of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Saxophone from the University of Iowa. Dr. O'Dell currently teaches music at the University of Southern Maine and at Central Maine Community College and from 1993 to 2001 was Director of Jazz Studies and Assistant Professor of Saxophone at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. As a recording artist for Southport Records, O'Dell has received glowing, national acclaim. His CD, Ancient Pines, featuring Tim's writing and improvising with Chicago musicians Tatsu Aoki and Ryan Shultz, has received wide, critical acclaim as has O'Dell's previous Southport release, Before My Life, which features ten of Tim's diverse compositions for jazz sextet. Another popular Southport album, Finally Elijah, showcases O'Dell's improvisational gifts with former Ink Spots vocalist Elijah Levi. Tim has also released Red Fire Ant Trio: Live In Iowa City with Chicagoans David Pavkovic and Tatsu Aoki, and has performed with George Russell, The Temptations, Gunther Schuller and Muhal Richard Abrams. "Dreams of Pangaea" is funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. Funding also generously provided by the University of Iowa Jazz Studies Department. For over 30 years Southport Records has recorded, produced and distributed new music from Chicago to a world market. To all media and lovers of fine music, we appreciate your support.
