Don't let the kitschy cover or the occasional sprinkling of cocktail piano fool you; The Man Who's Been Everywhere But in Love is not just another modern lounge album. Tim "Love" Lee's CD is a strange and delightful extravaganza. Like a lot of discs of this ilk, it draws from spaghetti Western soundtracks and old exotica platters, but Scott Walker stylings and the splendors of psychedelia can also be found here. Tracks often open or close with the sounds of travel: jet engines whir, trains whistle, horse hoofs clip-clop, and sure enough, Lee takes you on an adventurous sonic ride. Lush orchestration, chiming bells, martial beats, disco breaks, and harmonica tones are some of the things you'll hear along the way. Lee recalls groups like Air and Plastilina Mosh. These postmodern artists all possess the requisite sly humor and camp-influenced sensibility usually associated with nouveau swingers, but they craft fine musical offerings to boot. The Man Who may be excellent background music, but closer listening provides even greater pleasures. --Fred Cisterna
