Hail the mighty north...

"Thyrfing play an upbeat, synth-laden brand of viking oriented metal. Their lyrics are mostly to do with war, with song titles like ; 'Set Sail To Plunder' (which incorporates a cool sample of breaking waves), 'A Burning Arrow' & 'Celebration of Our Victory'. They aren't trying to say, "Hey look at how satanic we are", rather they are saying "Acknowledge our warrior power before we rip you a new orifice with our longswords". So how do they do this? Most of the songs are very uptempo, with reasonably fast drumming, but what I feel the musical highlight of the album is the synth. Sometimes its just a backing to the song, but occasionally it just takes the lead and turns the track into a synthy singalong. This is something not often done, and is certainly not heard often. This is heightened by the vocalist screaming along like he is either in battle or screaming in victory after disembowling an ememy. There are alot of groovy guitar riffs to keep everyone interested as well. This is a very interesting album, and the style of music is one which you don't get bored with quickly, if at all."
A true classic

"Thyrfing's one of the best, if not the best, viking metal bands. Their self-titled debut is a true classic of the genres. Ok, we must accept the fact that all their albums kicks serious ass, but this and Urkraft probably are the better.
They play a very keyboard-oriented version of Viking metal, the lyrics being about war, viking, norse mithology and the like, nice stuff. Catchy riffs, memorable melodies and very very heavy stuff without being inaudible as lots of black metal bands are.
Highly recommended if you can hear!"
Scourge of the cold northern wastes...

"Truly what it says it is, Thyrfing serves up an incredible slab of metal that is sure to invoke images of viking raids to the mind of any listener. Driving guitars and drums, with a dashing of relatively simplistic yet none the less effective synth work. Though the music is rather basic in it's theory, the execution of it definitly stands out, making this a great choice to any fan of brutal heavy metal."
