CD Reviews

Wounded Land: Beauty & Power All Roled Into One Album
Joe White | Layton, Utah United States | 03/24/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you like the heavy, less technical side of Dream Theater, the epic side of Ayreon and the darker side of Shadow Gallery, this album is for you.The vocals are very good, the double guitar attack pounds relentlessly and the keyboard provides a mystical, ominous element. This is progressive metal at it's finest. And no technical silliness is present, either. Threshold knows the value of good songwriting."

"I LIVE IN ROMANIA WHERE IS VERY HARD TO HAVE THIS KIND OF MUSIC, BUT ONE OF MY FRIENDS GAVE MA A COPY NOT VERY GOOD (i mean sound) AND I WAS ....I HAVE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT. IN MY OPINION THIS ALBUM IS BRILLIANT AND WILL STAY THAT WAY FOREVER. THE SOUND, THE QUITARS, THE VOICE ,EVERYTHING IS PERFECT. IF YOU DON'T LISTENED BY NOW AND YOU WILL NOT LISTEN IN THE NEAR FUTURE ,YOUR LIFE WAS IN VEIN. I MEAN ALL THAT I SAID."
One of the most melodic, poignant and beautiful albums ever

"Wounded Land is an album about 10 years old from a band that's hailed as the UK's most popular progressive metal outfit -- Threshold.Their latest (Critical Mass) may be heavier, and their new singer (who replaced Damien Wilson) may be more powerful, but Wounded Land stands as one of the most lyrically and melodically beautiful albums I own. It's so beautiful it hurts.Wilson's voice is a dead ringer for Robert Plant's circa Fate of Nations (Wilson posseses Plant's vocal inflections, range, and emotional delivery), so I'm totally into the vocals. They're astounding.Musically, Wounded Land is more keyboard-oriented than guitar-oriented, but that's okay with me. The synths swell and captivate, weaving an emotional fabric that wraps itself like a Technicolor Dreamcoat around me.Sure, there are guitars on Wounded Land. Karl Groom supplies chops a-plenty. It gets heavy at times. But the most magical thing about Wounded Land -- aside from its ecological, save-Mother-Earth lyrics -- is how every instrument (including Wilson's flawless voice) blend together in perfect harmony creating some of the world's most haunting melodies. This album is priceless. I adore it. Please find and buy it as soon as you can."
