Synopsis

Album Description
Thomas Barquee's The Sound of Om, on Spirit Voyage Music, is his newest release and an exciting new direction for this World Music artist. Comprised of seven Sanskrit chants, The Sound of Om resonates with depth and passion. The simple, ancient chants form the core of the recording, which is layered with an elaborate, exotic, and effective blend of Indian and Western instrumentation: bansuri, sarod, esraj, and santoor give equal time to keyboards, drums, percussion and bass, as well as electric and acoustic guitar. In less talented hands the result of this may have been disjointed, but Barquee's music is smooth and cohesive, creating an exultant, melodious world. The simplicity of the chants on this recording enables you to easily join in. "Chanting the mantra is the most intimate experience you can have of them because you get pulled into the energy field of the chants." says Barquee. "These mantras are universal, they reach beyond language and embrace all religions. They express love, wisdomand joy." An artist of uncommon sensitivity, depth, and breadth, Barquee created modern melodies that seem uniquely well-suited to the ancient mantras. Composing the music, Barquee felt guided by the mantra and experienced a strong synergy between the mantra and the music. In making The Sound of Om, Barquee traveled to Calcutta to record with some of the greatest living Indian musicians. This lends a rare authenticity to such a diverse recording. "The Indian people were very generous and talented. They encouraged me to follow my intuition," remembers Barquee. "After recording various classical Indian instruments I returned to Los Angeles to add a Western flavor." "I feel lucky about this album and that is one of the reasons why we?re adding a Lakshmi statue on the back of the cover," continues Barquee. "It is a blessing to be working with such talented and dedicated people and I am well aware of the team effort."

CD Reviews

The Dweller Within
Bev Neumann | Portland, OF | 12/16/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

""Barquee has a unique talent and ability for melding the sounds of the classical Indian instruments with a flavor of distinction from the west. I truly enjoyed the blend of instrumentation in this CD. My favorite was track 5 - Om Sri Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama. The sweetness of the sound appealed to my inner self. Also the instrumentation leading into track 6 - Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo made the energy run up my spine and filled my body with a sense of gratitude. I would really love to have him produce an instrumental CD to take you through the sun salutations to a meditation and relaxation. Sometimes I want to separate the energy of mantra and music for my practice of sun salutations. I adore his productions with other artists in the Game of Chants, Prem, and Shanti. The team effort of these talented artists has produced the recordings of my favorite mantras coming from the writings of the Sikh Gurus in the divine language of Gurmukhi.

I would recommend this CD for an experience beyond tradition and trend - for anyone wanting to turn their consciousness to the dweller in the heart and experience the divine while in the human body." - Bev Neumann, Portland, OR"

The music is heavenly chanted and the mantras words of inmense power, chanted with passion and inner peace. The track that I like the most is the number 2, it is, I think, one of the most beatifull piece of music that I listenned in the past years. I also recommend to buy "Temple" and "Missa" in adiction to this cd. I await with great expectation the next release of this interesting composer!"
Best Mantra CD I've listened to

""This is by far the best mantra CD I have listened to. I love every song on the CD. You can easily chant/sing along with the music. Each song takes you on a different journey. The song that touches me the most is the first one on the track which is called" Om Maha Devaya Namaha". I feel so spiritually uplifted after chanting along with the song. Each instrument is so beautifully played, especially the flute. The mixture of Western and Indian music blends so well together that you cannot help feeling very moved and connected to the universe. I really can't say enough about this wonderful CD. It is a definite must for your spiritual CD collection. Even my husband who loves hard rock enjoyed listening to "the sound of OM. I believe also the reason why I love this CD is because it has a taste of Jesse Cooke in it who is another performer I really like. I highly recommend this CD. You won't be disappointed. Thank you Thomas Barquee. I can't wait to hear what's next." - Tyra McMahon, Vernon, BC CANADA"
