"This is the first solo recording of Monk. After this is Thelonious Himself and Monk Alone in San Fransisco on Riverside label, and then a whole archive of solo recordings on Columbia (Solo Monk, etc). This was recorded in paris on june 7 1954 (he met pannonica at this time) and this was released also on the vogue label. These recordings will most likely be of interest to any serious Monk fans. I am one of those, and these cuts are very interesting to listen to because his arrangements of the songs are shockingly bare, more so than on any Monk recording. If you enjoy the sentimental side of Monk you should enjoy these recordings. Oddly enough, not very much stride technique is used here and it sounds almost as if hes playing with a band (minus the band). Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is beautiful on this CD, and this is also my favorite cut of "Round Midnight as a solo piece."
