Foot-stompingly good Celtic rock

"I heard the Volunteers live at the Globe in Coral Gables (FL)over the St. Patrick's Day weekend and bought their new CD there. It captures the spirit of the live performance, a blissful evening at which people at all stages and degrees of legal drinking age danced and sang along with this Celtic rock band as the musicians, in true jamming style, outdid each other in exuberant riffs. The songs are traditional Scottish/Irish, the foot-stomping prototypes of American folk and country, and they work just fine with a solid rock beat. This CD has joined the exclusive few that are housed between the two front seats of the car-a favorite for the school/work/home commute. The Volunteers drink deep from the musical spring that runs from the Scottish Highlands through Appalachia, through Doc Watson, Pete Seeger, Leo Kottke, Peter Yarrow, the Battlefield Band, but with a sparkle and a swagger all their own."

"Under the leadership of Mr. Milne's musty growl, the Volunteers really do carry us through a raucous litany of Whiskey, Love & Disaster. There is pain, there is valor, there is stupidity and much up-the-skirts lusting at stray "colleens"- all from a time and place we never did know. The journey rocks, wails, and mourns by turn. Every bit honest in its imperfections, and in the utter perfection of its heart. The kickass talent of all the players don't hurt neither. From track one thru ten, I've not found a one to skip. And while I've only just cycled WL&D into my road mix, I'm hooked bad - and my steering wheel's the worse for wear from the beating. Hell, just yesterday I almost found myself saying "ne'er" to a friend. Get your hands on this Vols disc, right now. It'll make you want to rise up, take on the world, then fall down drunk in the lap of a tavern lass later that eve. Grinning."
