Synopsis

Product Description
The Steep Canyon Rangers are destined for greatness. Their dedication to the music shows in every note they play, but it's the band's amazing songwriting talent that makes them truly exceptional. While firmly rooted in the bluegrass tradition, their ability to draw in elements of hard core honky-tonk, classic country and the blues sets them apart from the rest of the pack. "Deep In The Shade" follows their winning formula with another collection of diverse, mostly self-penned material guaranteed to please long time fans and introduce younger audiences to the high, lonesome sound of bluegrass.

CD Reviews

The Very Best in Bluegrass!
Robert R. Lyon | Olney, Maryland | 10/06/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Still another superb CD from clearly one of the very top, if not the top

bluegrass band in the land! This exellent group of yong artists just gets better and better with each recording! Woody Platt has never sounded

better, as the lead vocalist, than he does on "The Mountain Gonna Sing". Each of these talented men is very talented in their own right and on their individual instruments and it is high time that they are each recognized by the IBMA, as such. Graham Sharp and Charles Humphrey III (The Bearded Bard of Bluegrass) wrote almost all of these songs and are indeed among the very best writers in bluegrass - it is often said that bluegrass music, more than almost any other type of music, is all about the lyrics and this is one of many reasons that sets the Rangers a part from so many other bands - they write almost all of their songs and this keeps their music fresh and original. This CD should certainly go right to the top of the bluegrass charts and should be the leading candidate for album of the year. Any number of these songs could and should become number one on the charts including "The Mountain Gonna Sing", "Have Mercy","Turn Up The Bottle" and "Shades of Gray". The Rangers have been together longer than almost any other bluegrass band and this shows up in their wonderful and tight harmonies, energy and the way they complimnet each other. This group is a must see in person! No group is more fan friendly and each and every performance is very high energy. It can not get better than Nicky (fiddle), Mike (mandolin)and Graham (banjo)

and rumor has it thta Graham has continued to be a true mentor to Steve Martin!"
Touring with Steve Martin.....

"I don't have any albums (yet!) but will definitely be getting them. Just saw these guys last night with Steve Martin on his Denver leg of "The Crow" tour, and the SCR are outstanding!! Every member contributes - there are no prima donnas, and each had an opportunity to showcase their talent. Their fiddle player Nicky was one fire last night - one encore song was "Orange Blossom Special" and he played like nobody I've ever seen before! The other encore song was "King Tut" done bluegrass-style, and a fine rendition it was. I look forward to seeing where SCR goes in the future. If you have the chance to catch them live, I highly recommend it - especially if they're with Steve. Awesome musicians!!"
