For a label that began its existence with no particular stylistic direction, Sound Stage 7 Records handily transformed itself into one of the foremost purveyors of `60s Southern soul. Founded by Fred Foster in 1963 as a subsidiary to his Nashville-based Monument label (where Roy Orbison registered a slew of mammoth hits and Boots Randolph blew up a sax storm), Sound Stage 7 scored pop hits with hits by the Dixiebelles and lesser charters by Joe Perkins and the Monarchs. Other early signees included future Atlanta Rhythm Section front man Rodney Justo and the late Johnny Ace's brother, billed as Ace St. Claire. This compilation of American independent Soul/R&B/Funk music is currently one of most exciting areas of record collecting. Sound Stage 7 was one of the greatest labels for this music. From such humble beginnings sprang a southern soul recording empire right in the heart of Nashville! We invited serious DJ's, record collectors and all round Soul/Funk addicts, to compile the best funky CD from the SS7 archives.
