CD Reviews

A couple of rare gems for ardent fans and collectors

(4 out of 5 stars)

"It is interesting to hear undubbed versions of some classic tracks as well as some previously-unheard and alternate versions. This instrumental rock group is not to be confused with the other "blues" group with raunchy album titles."

"1. It's historic; the Shadows used to open for the Beatles. 2. It is very well mastered. 3. It answers the almost twisted question, "What is British surf?" 4. The Shadows demonstrate a certain amount of self mocking that American surf bands lacked. 5. Unlike a lot of period surf music, most of the material here is original. 6. Wackiness like cut 10, "Razzmatazz." 7. Owning it makes you seem "international." (You can seem cooler still by checking out some Australian surf bands like The Atlantics.) 8. Content wise, this is pretty much a double album for the price of a single. 9. Bizarre cover of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." 10. It's perfect for backyard parties."
