Synopsis

Product Description
A re-press of this 2003 release. Yes, the 'seminally seminal' guitar slingers from the dawn of Creation Records whose measly two singles have since become something of the holy grail for those who like their 80s pop equal parts bubbling melancholia, Byrdsian jangle and anthemic flag-waving. 'Magpie Eyes 1982-85' gathers together practically everything they released, and didn t release for that matter, in their short but perfectly-formed lifetime. As well as Why Does The Rain and Up The Hill And Down The Slope (huge indie hits when such things actually mattered), here are studio out-takes, BBC sessions and live tracks as well as contributions from James Dean Bradfield, Alan McGee, Janice Long, Steve Lamacq, Dave Gedge...the whole celebrity fan club in fact!

CD Reviews

Classic early CREATION RECORDS british indie pop
Joseph Broze | chicago | 07/10/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"One of the earliest bands on Alan McGee's famed CREATION RECORDS imprint, the LOFT played a style of British indie guitar rock that stood out at the time. They started in 1980 and recorded some great music between 1982 and 1985.

They were highly influenced by bands like the Byrds, Television, The Television Personalities, and the Swell Maps. Their 60s and post-punk influences led to some great guitar-based British indie pop, predating the C86 movement by a couple years.

Their sound was actually somewhat similar to the New Zealand indie pop movement based around the famed Flying Nun label (ie- The Clean, The Bats, The Chills, etc). They would have also fit in on the Postcard label out of Scotland as well (Aztec Camera, Orange Juice, Josef K, the Go Betweens, etc)!!!

Guitarist/singer Pete Astor formed the more well-known WEATHER PROPHETS after the demise of the LOFT. Like all Revola releases, this CD has great liner notes, artwork, and sound. Get this CD to learn some indie pop history here, kids!!!"
