CD Reviews

Art of Noise's best and darkest
Andre Donnell | Ohaupo, Waikato New Zealand | 11/17/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the first AON album I bought, in the dim, dark 80s, and for me it revealed electronically synthesised music reaching a genuine maturity. Here were harsh, driving beats, jarring industrial percussion, snippets of everyday suburbia and the spin of political and milatary madmen. In other words, grotesquely beautiful, almost documentary-style 'music with a statement', although I'm sure AON would never commit to saying what that statement might be. It is, after all, in the sounds.Subsequent AON albums (In visible silence; In no sense, nonsense) were far less dark, more purely clever, and at times sublimely ethereal. I enjoy them immensely too, but for me Who's afraid of is their best.BTW, Who's afraid of (1984) is a concept album; Daft (1983/4) is a *compilation* album from three sources, being Who's afraid of, Moments in love, and Into battle. I prefer concept albums, but Daft contains early AON material otherwise difficult to get!"
Outrageous marketing ploy

"fans, ready to dosh out US$25 or more just for the sake of one 12" remix on this cd? apart from "close-up", ALL the other tracks are included in the domestic release of "daft", which is much better value. if they had issued "close-up" on "daft", it would have made this release completely redundant. and from a marketing point of view, that would have been truly "daft"!"
