CD Reviews

Australia's First Country Music Star
Andrew Smith | Howrah, Tasmania Australia | 09/26/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Tex Morton (1916-1983) first recorded for The Columbia Graphophone Company in 1936, when he was only 19 years old. He continued to record for them until 1943, when he walked out essentially because of a disagreement with the company. Morton was inspired by Jimmie Rodgers (and probably Vernon Dalhart and Carson Robison). His early 78s -- featured on this album, with the balance on volume two -- set the trend for country music in Australia for the next decade. If you like Jimmie Rodgers, Goebel Reeves and the like, chances are you'll like Tex. Nearly all songs here feature him singing, yodeling and playing guitar."
