Product Description
TERRENCE BREWER
MI HISTORIA (MY STORY)
The Calling: Volume 4 - The Latin Jazz Project
Award-winning guitarist/composer Terrence Brewer returns with his 7th studio recording as a bandleader, Mi Historia (My Story) The Calling: Volume 4, The Latin-Jazz Project (2014, Strong Brew Music). Mi Historia (My Story) , is a passionately fiery and grooving tribute to the Latin Music styles which Brewer grew up idolizing. From up-beat, driving samba s like Love s Evolution to laid-back, groove-oriented cha-cha s like Shut Up and Play and dreamily sweet Bossa Nova s like Afternoon Romance , Brewer s compositions/arrangements show the maturity and diversity of someone who loves and is steeped in the Latin-Jazz tradition. Six of the nine compositions on Mi Historia are Brewer original compositions with the three standards penned by Brazilian masters Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa.
Brewer s earliest Latin music influences were classic Latin-Jazz recordings by Charlie Parker and Machito, Dizzy Gillespie with Chano Pozo, Cal Tjader with Poncho Sanchez, Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and pop music forces like Gloria Estefan & the Miami Sound Machine and Sheila E. There were also contemporary inspirations as well - Brewer s contemporary generation of San Francisco based Latin-Jazz players, Wayne Wallace, John Santos, and the Josh Jones Latin Ensemble to name a few.
Making the most profound impact on Brewer, however, in his Latin-Jazz musical development was hearing, seeing (and later performing with) one of the Lain-Jazz legends up close and personal, Pete Pops Escovedo, who also hails from Brewer s hometown of Pittsburg, CA.
