"This Hep CD (and its companion, "Of Thee I Swing") is just fantastic. These recordings from 1938 and 1939 by Teddy Wilson and His Orchestra feature such side men as Bobby Hackett, Pee Wee Russell, Gene Sedric, Johnny Hodges, Benny Carter, Ben Webser, Chu Berry, Roy Eldridge, Lester Young, and a host of other jazz greats--over half of the tracks also feature vocals from Billie Holiday. This isn't the hot swing of Jimmie Lunceford or the the more "intellectual" jazz of Duke Ellington (I appreciate Ellington's music of the same time, but I don't really enjoy it). There are moments of "hot," but generally, Wilson's Orchestra swings in a gentle, mellow sort of way and I could listen to this CD for hours without tiring of it. Like a warm caramel-spiced apple cider on a cold winter's evening, this is "comfort" music! The transfers by John R. T. Davies are exceptional; these recordings have never sounded so warm, balanced, and clear as on this CD. The booklet has a nice set of liner notes by Chris Sheridan and a full discography. Of the hundreds of 1920s/1930s jazz CDs in my collection, this is one I pull out over and over again. Highly recommended!"
