CD Reviews

A fabulous CD from a seasoned master
11/22/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Teddy Edwards is one of those great musicians with a rich and fascinating career, who many jazz fans feel deserves a wider audience. I'd have to agree. The liner notes say that he was 76 years old when this was recorded. Yet Edwards plays with the fire and drive of a man half his age. It's hard to imagine it, but this fellow played with the likes of Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, and he's still going strong. If anyone was long over-due for one of those PR pushes you see in the jazz world from time to time, when they get behind a great artist like Joe Henderson, Phil Woods, Shirley Scott or Dexter Gordon, it is Teddy Edwards.I've been following his career for some time now, and his albums are always very, very good, and this one is no exception. My favorite track is "I'm So Afraid of Love", which is one of the prettiest ballads I've heard him play. If anything, Edwards has just been getting better and better, particularly when he plays ballads. All the compositions are by Edwards, they are all quite good, and they don't all sound the same, which can be a problem on some jazz CDs.This is one of my favorite jazz records of the year, and it is from the soundtrack of a documentary about Edwards, which I really want to see."
