CD Reviews

Surprisingly Marvellous
Dane S. Thomas | Lancaster, California USA | 11/22/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"What is so amazing about this collection is the clarity and clean sound that they have managed to extract from these old and priceless recordings. Yet, they retain the sparkle and depth of the original 78's and in some instances exceed all expectations. Sound quality seems to be much better than on other rival labels containing identical material. Great care has gone into the mastering of these items and it is excellent. I listened to samples of other Ted Weems albums on line before I bought this one and am very pleased with the quality. Enjoy!"
HE COULD CUT THE MUSTARD
Barry McCanna | Normandy, France | 03/07/2010

"NOTE: This review refers to the ASV Living Era CD, the title of which is "Marvellous!" but which Amazon has inadvertently confused with the Memphis Archives CD "Marvelous", which means that the tracklist is incorrect!

Ted Weems is not a name that's commonly associated with hot dance band sides, but the band he led in the late twenties/early thirties was quite capable of cutting the mustard with the best of them. He and bass-player Country Washburn also composed several memorable songs, of which Jig Time and Oh, Mo'nah are featured here. The band had a full ensemble sound, which has been well captured in the remastering, and the overall impression is of a bunch of young guys having fun. Playing time is just under an hour, which is excusable given that this reissue dates from 1984."
