CD Reviews

Something truly different in the rock idiom.

"Tartufi's debut CD for Southern Records is an excellent follow-up to "Us Upon Buildings Upon Us." Where that record was replete with time changes and instrumental switch-ups that were often jaw-droppingly amazing (especially when you saw this two-piece band pull them off flawlessly in concert), "Nests Of Waves And Wires" is more of a textural fabric.

Guitars and bass are largely handled by the versatile Lynne Angel, who also gives Tartufi its distinct, almost chanted vocals; while a battery of percussion and other unexpected instruments are handled by the equally nimble Brain Gorman. Where instrumental gymnastics informed the previous album, "Nests" builds its songs from longer, interlocking passages, teasingly suggestive of traditional song structure while still inhabiting Tartufi's unique perspective on rock music.

An absolute live MUST if they come to your town, in the "has to be seen to be believed" category. "Nests Of Waves And Wires" has been in heavy rotation at my house, it's a standout release for 2009 so far. I highly recommend it for people who enjoy the more experimental, angular end of post-rock, unusual guitar playing, or bands that push the rock format in imaginative new directions."
