The best of the MCA years
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 08/23/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Tanya's most successful period came with Capitol records beginning on 1986. Of her earlier work, people are more likely to remember her earliest recordings with Columbia, which included such classics as Delta Dawn and Would you lay with me in a field of stone. After leaving Columbia in the mid-seventies, Tanya signed for MCA and was (at least to begin with) very successful. Yet those recordings, the best of which are included here, are often overlooked.

With such classics as San Antonio stroll, Here's some love and Texas when I die, it's amazing that so many country fans ignore this period of Tanya's career. And there's more - I particularly like You've got me to hold on to, It's a cowboy loving night and Dancing the night away (this last song has also been recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys and Crystal Gayle among others.

Maybe the reason for people forgetting about this period of Tanya's career is the comparative rarity with which MCA re-issues them. As I write this review, this is the only American compilation currently available that focuses exclusively on Tanya's MCA recordings although you can get some of them as part of the outstanding career-spanning double CD (48 upper hits) or you can get them on a British compilation (Essential), which contains eighteen of her MCA tracks (better than the eleven here) and which is available here as an import.

Tanya's MCA music, as represented here, is as good as anything that she recorded for Columbia and Capitol. If you love Tanya's music, you need these songs whether you go for the double CD, the British compilation or this one."
