CD Reviews

Overlooked Cream-like Classic

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Was a T.I.M.E. when "alternative radio" meant something - in the sixties, radio stations wouldn't play much of the best music out there. Anything suspected by the station owners as being subversive, anti-war, about drugs, etc etc was systematically eliminated from airplay, leaving only the blandest pablum on the radio. "Yummy Yummy Yummy". For example, the Doors, Cream, Spirit, T.I.M.E, Fever Tree, United States of America, Country Joe and the Fish, much late Beatle music and many other bands could only be heard on low power college radio or by word of mouth. On the college radio station, Smooth Ball, by T.I.M.E, got as many requests as Cream! It's very similar to Cream - the guitar isn't quite as explosive as Clapton, but the same sound and feeling, less improvisational. Certain people used to, well, have romantic sessions to "Morning Come". Over and over. This was quite a popular pastime. If you heard this song from behind a closed door, you knew what was happening inside. So things have changed, some alternative radio sixties groups are now household names and favorites of the Classic Rock stations, others, just as good, are totally unknown. The first part of this set - T.I.M.E., is pretty forgettable bubble gum Hippie, but "Smooth Ball" is a classic, an overlooked Classic."
