One of Britain's best-known and popular conductors, Vernon Handley was a constant champion of British music throughout his career. His recordings regularly received the highest acclaim from music critics, and he won several major awards, including the Gramophone Award in 1989 for his recording of Robert Simpson's Symphony No. 9 and a British Record Industry Award for Vaughn Williams' Symphony No. 5; the latter is part of a complete cycle he recorded with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Handley served as Principal Guest Conductor of the orchestra, and was eventually named their Conductor Laureate. Additional appointments included Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chief Conductor & Artistic Director of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Handley was also an honorary member of the Royal Philharmonic Society.
