"Simply a fantastic rock and roll album. "Mountainside" was on the radio - the rest of the album's songs depart from this tune's style a bit, but throughout the album is wonderful soulful singing, incredible musicianship, and solid songwriting - good variety too. Favorites are "Evergreen" "Mountainside", and "Ever Made Love to Be"... You won't be disappointed."
Should've Been Much Bigger... GREAT Album! (With '08 Addendu

"I first heard Sweet Vine at the radio station I worked at in Raleigh, NC. I was hooked immediately on "Mountainside." When we started playing "Candy For Fools," I begged my boss for a copy. I had to have it!!! LOL ... And to this day, it's one of the few CDs out of the hundreds I own that actually still gets extended amounts of time in the CD player.
To me, they're on par with the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Black Crowes, etc. in terms of the passion and feel they put into their music. And they're good players too. Besides being influenced by the aforementioned bands, you'll hear a little Jim Croce (especially on 'Up To You') and some old school R & B here and there (see 'Evergreen') ... plenty to discover on this CD.
Anyway, If you dig any of those bands, even a little, check this CD out. There's not a song on here that's bad, period. It's completely listenable beginning to end - truly a great rock & roll record, and probably one of the most underrated bands of the late 90's. Very heartfelt vocals and musical performances, and a fun listen - put it on, turn it up, and enjoy!
ADDENDUM, May 2008:
It's been over 11 years since this disc came out, and 7 years since I wrote this review. And you know what? I STILL love this album. It's still great, and I still highly recommend it."
A well-written and accoustically well-balanced album

"Sweet Vine's album has captured most of the different styles of music that are out there today. By doing so, they have created their own blend and style. People who love Blues, Rock, and Jazz will really enjoy this album. I personally was impressed by the way Sweet Vine has shown its maturity for a debut album. Listen to it once and I guarantee that people will place it in there top ten albums of all time."
Used or new, just BUY IT! You won't regret it.

"When Sweet Vine came out, too many people were comparing them to those 2 hit wonders, Hootie and the Blowfish, but the two groups sound NOTHING alike. For one thing: Hans Eberbach is soulful without faking it like that "other" singer. If a person knows music at all, a person can hear the Allman Brothers, Black Crowes, Bad Co., OLD Aerosmith and even some Led Zep tossed in for good measure. Sweet Vine has a way of blending these musical styles together to create their own sound. My hands-down favorite song on the album is "Three Times Denied". It's a jam song, reminiscent of the 70's AOR radio. INCREDIBLE tune. "First Time" is a warm, touching ballad of devotion to a man's family (written by the drummer for his wife and son). It is carefully balanced poetry and doesn't cross the line into being sappy at all. It's a beautiful tribute to love. "Castles and Hovels" (also written by the drummer) reflects an inner love of family and the good things to come through STRENGTH and commitment without being preachy. They are songs for "everyman". Everyone can relate to them. FABULOUS work! It's a shame the band is no more. They could have continued to churn out wonderful album after completely delicious album."
A MUST for those who love blues-based rock!

"It's unfortunate luck wasn't smiling on Sweet Vine back in the day. They should be on their 6th album by now. This record has it all: excellent musicianship, superb lyrical content which avoids any and all cliches, poetry to which many people can relate, plus excellent grooves to get a person up & movin'! Considering how inexpensive this album is now, purchasing it is almost as good as picking it up for free. Give in! You know you wanna! You won't regret it. If you enjoy the down-home rockin' style of the Allman Brothers, old Aerosmith, and the storytelling of Lynyrd Skynyrd---this record is a must for you!"
